Master’s Degree in Zootechnics


DESCRIPTION
The main objective of the Master’s Degree in Zootechnics is to contribute to the scientific and technological development in this field of knowledge, increasing efficiency and sustainably establishing animal production. Other specific objectives of the program are:
Research: develop the main animal production systems in the region influenced by the program; identify the main problems which need scientific and technological development; bring technological development to the region through scientific actions.
Class education: develop professionals at a Master’s level so that they can meet the demands of (private and public) education institutions concerning teaching, research and community outreach in the field of Science and Animal Technology.
Community outreach: promote inter-institutional and multidisciplinary actions of applied research, approaching not only problem diagnosis but also scientific solutions for issues regarding animal production systems in the region.
 
Area of Concentration: ANIMAL PRODUCTION
Lines of research:
● Nutrition and Non-Ruminant Production
 This line of research includes production and nutrition of poultry, swine, fish and other economically important non-ruminant species.
● Nutrition and Ruminant Production
 This line of research includes production and nutrition of beef and dairy cattle, sheep, goats and other economically important ruminant species.
 
SYLLABUS
MANDATORY DISCIPLINES
TEACHING INTERNSHIP I
Special discipline offered to scholarship students. Teaching activities in the courses of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FCA) of UFGD.
EXPERIMENTAL STATISTICS APPLIED TO ANIMAL PRODUCTION
Basic knowledge related to Experimental Statistics, including basic principles, significance tests (average comparison tests) and scientific designs, for balanced and unbalanced data. Also, a study about linear and multiple regression and residual effects.
SCIENTIFIC METHOD      
Science and scientific knowledge in the construction of the scientific method and the current paradigms of science. The organization of the research in accordance with the regulations regarding scientific papers. 
SEMINARS  
Methodology for the presentation of scientific papers as seminars, with audiovisual resources, technical abilities for presentations of scientific papers, assistance in the preparation (organization of the contente and didactic approach) of classes and thesis projects.

SWINE WELFARE 
Welfare science and its instruments for diagnosis and solution of problems related to swine production systems.
POULTRY NUTRITION    
Provide students with knowledge about the various aspects of poultry nutrition, making them aware of the main available foods, their nutritional facts and the principles behind poultry nutrition.
FISH NUTRITION  
Anatomic and physiologic characteristics of fish. Particularities of fish nutrition. Metabolism of proteins and amino acids. Metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. Metabolism of vitamins and minerals. Nutritional requirements for the main species of fish.
SWINE NUTRITION          
Principles of nutrition. Nutritional requirements. New concepts about swine nutrition.
Continental fish production system. Principles of continental fish farming in different production systems.
SWINE PRODUCTION SYSTEM
Study about swine production system considering technical aspects, economic feasibility and sustainability.
POULTRY PRODUCTION SYSTEM
Provide students with knowledge about the various sectors of modern industrial poultry production in Brazil and in other countries, making them able to plan, equip and manage poultry facilities in accordance with the current production and biosafety programs.
 
 
RUMINANT NUTRITION AND PRODUCTION
CONSERVATION OF FOOD FOR ANIMAL PRODUCTION
Concepts about conservation of food. Microbiological and biochemical processes. Evaluation of forage plants for silage. Common additives and procedures in silage. Evaluation of silage quality. Haymaking. Analysis of factors for choosing forage production and conservation processes. Alkalinization as a form of conservation. High humidity grain storage.
PHYSIOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT OF FORAGE PLANTS
General considerations about the morphology, growth and development of the main forage grass and legumes. Mixing forage species. Grazing resistance mechanisms. Nutritional value of forage plants and animal performance. Pasture management. Grazing methods. Supplementation strategies. Strategic use of pasture.
RUMINANT NUTRITION 
Classification of ruminants. Rumen microbiology. Use of carbohydrates by ruminants. Use of non-protein nitrogenous compounds by ruminants. Fats in ruminant nutrition. Main functions of minerals in rumen. Synthesis of the B-complex vitamins.
 BEEF CATTLE PRODUCTION SYSTEM
Beef cattle production systems; Zootechnical bookkeeping and traceability; Breeding season; Calf management; Carcass finish and characteristics; Management of beef cows; Techniques for improving reproduction efficiency; Disposal criteria; Management of beef bulls.
DAIRY CATTLE PRODUCTION SYSTEM        
Situation of the dairy cattle production in Brazil and in the world. Breeds and crossbreeding. Planning dairy cattle activities. Nutrition and food. Raising and managing calves and cows. Nutritional and metabolic disturbances. Milking and milk control. Reproduction and sanitation management.
BEEF SHEEP PRODUCTION SYSTEM
Beef sheep production and market system in Brazil and in the world. Production and reproduction characteristics of locally adapted and exotic breeds used for beef production based on resource management and sustainability in the different production systems.
RELATED DOMAIN
AMBIENCE APPLIED TO ANIMAL PRODUCTION  
Study about the most current aspects of the main mechanisms of Applied Thermodynamics; Biology, physiology and the Mechanisms of heat transfer involving climate and thermal regulation; study about the environmental interaction between animal facilities and pollutants and their effects upon animal prophylaxis and health; the importance of the general aspects of the mechanism of generation, effects and control of ammonia gas in animal production.
PHYSIOLOGY OF DIGESTION IN PRODUCTION ANIMALS
Understand the mechanical, anatomical and physiological principles that are connected to the digestive system. Also comprehend the importance of maintaining homeostasis for a good animal performance.
MANAGEMENT OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION WASTE
Provide knowledge in the areas of treatment and recycling of waste from animal production, through the study about concepts related to composting, vermicomposting and bio-anaerobic digestion techniques.
QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE METHODS FOR EVALUATION OF CARCASS AND MEAT 
Factors that influence carcass and meat quality of the main species of zootechnical interest. Physical composition of carcass and proportions of the main primal and Market cuts of beef. Structure and composition of muscular tissue, post-morten modifications and the determining factors related to meat quality. Techniques for quantitative and qualitative analysis of meat.
LABORATORY TECHNIQUES IN FOOD ANALYSIS
Quantitative and qualitative analysis of foods related to animal production.
 
SPECIAL TOPICS
This discipline will be taught by invited professors from UFGD and from other institutions and its objective is to complement all syllabus of the program.
NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF FOODS
Nomenclature and classification of food. Main foods used for animal production. Formulation of animal food. Food additives. Evaluation of foods. Methods for determining digestibility for ruminants. Partial digestion. Use of indicators in studies of digestion. Factors that affect digestibility. Nutritional balance. Nutritional efficiency of inorganic macro-elements.
