DESCRIPTION
The Master’s and Doctoral Degree Program in Geography has the main objective of promoting professional education that is committed to the advancement of geographic knowledge in order to meet the needs of society and the diminishment of current inequalities. The area of concentration is “Production of Regional Space and Borders" and it aims at comprehending the South of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, the production/reproduction of the socio-spatial/socio-environmental dynamics which are complementary and contradictory, including the immemorial indigenous cosmographies, the recent and quick expansion of the sugar and alcohol sector, and the processes of economic, political, demographic and cultural expansion and occupation of the “empty spaces”, the “March to the West” and the integration between national and international markets which are strong in the state. These movements are affected by impressive productions of borders, mainly between Brazil and Paraguay, and so it overflows to regional and continental spaces, in export/import activities and migrations. This complexity binds the area of concentration together and it permeates the regional space, not as a physical space but as a process, particularizing the Borders and making them a rich field for studies.
