PROFESSIONAL MASTER’S DEGREE IN PHYSICS TEACHING

DESCRIPTION

The National Program of Professional Master’s Degree in Physics Teaching (MNPEF) aims at reaching middle and high school teachers, with emphasis on aspects of different contents in the area of physics. It is an initiative of the Brazilian Physical Society (SBF) and it has the goal of educating, at master’s level, a great number of Basic Education teachers. The objective is to provide graduates with the domain of the subjects of Physics as well as the current techniques related to teaching such as strategies for the use of media, technological and/or computing resources in the classroom for motivation, information, experimentation and demonstrations of different physical phenomena.

Lines of research:
● Physics in Basic Education

SYLLABUS
Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
Fundamentals of thermodynamics. The laws of thermodynamics. Thermal machines. Entropy. Phase space. Microcanonical, canonical and grand canonical ensemble. Thermodynamic balance. Ideal gas. The third law of thermodynamics and quantum mechanics. Specific heat. Einstein solid.

Milestones in the development of Physics
Aspects of the history and epistemology of physics: physics as a human construction. Inductivism, fakability, paradigms, research traditions, conceptual populations, development of the scientific spirit, models and theories, realism and instrumentalism, the dimensions of the scientific activity (theory, experimentation, simulation and instrumentation). The topics must be approached in the light of the main milestones of the history of physics.

Quantum Mechanics
Conceptual and formal fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics. Superposition principle. States and observables. Measuring. Systems with bivalent variables. Quantum entanglement, decoherence and information. Applications.

Theoretical Fundamentals of Teaching and Learning
Basics of learning and teaching theories as a reference system for the analysis of issues related to physics teaching at middle and high school levels. The first behavioral theories (Watson, Guthrie and Thorndike). Skinner’s behaviorism. Gagné’s neo-behaviorism. Cognitivism according to Piaget, Bruner, Vigotsky, Ausbel and Kelly. Humanism according to Rogers and Novak. The theory of mental models by Johnson-Laird. The theory of conceptual fields by Vergnaud. Freire’s pedagogy.

Electromagnetism
Laws of electromagnetism. Electric field and magnetic field. Lorentz force. Maxwell’s equations. Light as a solution to Maxwell’s equations. Electromagnetism and restricted relativity.

Experimental Activities for Middle and High School
The role of experimental and laboratory activities in the process of teaching and learning:  conceptual and methodological aspects. The objectives of experimental activities and their implementation in formal and non-formal learning spaces. The various forms of experimental activities. The difference between real and virtual laboratory activities and the role of modelling. Data collection and analysis using multiple resources.

Contemporary Physics (Condensed Matter Physics)
This discipline aims at approaching some topics about contemporary physics. Examples of these topics are: Particle Physics, Space-Time, Condensed Matter Physics, Physics  of Complex Systems, Biophysics, etc.
