Molecular targets in chronic and infectious-parasitic diseases
Discuss about chronic and infectious-parasitic diseases in their molecular aspects aiming at integrating them to the physiopathological comprehension of the disease as well as the possibilities of improvement regarding diagnosis and the elaboration of new drugs.
Scales of measurement, types of variables, table and graphic representation, frequency distribution; measures for summarizing data and probabilities; binomial and normal distributions and distribution of sample means; hypothesis testing: formalization and comparison of 2 means; comparison of multiple means: analysis of variance; confidence intervals; contingency tables 2 × 2 and tables 2 × k; analysis of multiple tables 2 × 2. The mantel-haenszel test; statistic power and sample size calculation; non-parametric tests; multivariate analysis.
Epidemiology: concept and applications; measuring disease occurrence; measuring effects; study design and analysis: transversal, cohort, case and control, intervention and ecological; types of errors and bias.
Special topics
Current and/or innovative themes of interest for assistance, class education and/or research. It can be taught as a theoretical or a practical discipline. Lecturers will be doctor-professors and the discipline will be taught in UFGD or in another institution, provided it is authorizes by the coordination of the Program.
Teaching internship
Supervised participation in the pedagogical construction of the discipline in theoretical and practical activities such as the following: elaboration of class plans, textbooks, lecturing theoretical and practical classes and development of assessment methods.
Ethics in scientific research
This discipline focuses on ethical issues related to scientific research, mainly regarding those that involve human beings. There will be analysis and discussions about: national and international documents regarding the theme, as well as a broad bibliographic reference on the subject.
Seminar on research I
Debate between professors and students of the Program as also invited professors about the lines of research and the projects under development, with critical discussions about the research protocols. Discussion about relevant scientific papers (journal club).
Seminar on research II
Debate between professors and students of the Program as also invited professors about the lines of research and the projects under development, with critical discussions about the research protocols. Discussion about relevant scientific papers (journal club).
Scientific method - humans
The objective of this discipline is to provide students with theoretical-conceptual basis about scientific knowledge and processes involved in its production considering contemporary thinking and discussions. It also aims at introducing basic concepts of research philosophy, stimulate scientific thinking and the interest towards research. Special emphasis will be given to the necessary instruments for the elaboration of the research project, for the execution of scientific work and for bibliographic research. The discipline will also approach all the steps for the elaboration of a scientific project, from the initial idea, to manual and electronic bibliographic research, the execution of the work, statistical analysis and publication of the results. Content will be shared through lectures, group discussions, reading and critical analysis of research projects, among other teaching methods. Students’ performance will be assessed through their participation in activities and the individual elaboration of their research projects.
Scientific method – experimental
Introduction to scientific knowledge, its characteristics, science and the scientific method, its principles, objectives, structure and analytical variables. Provide students with knowledge in the areas of anatomy, physiology, genetics and animal manipulation regarding different species; develop students’ aptitute for properly choosing and using the specific species and lineage to their experimental protocol; present and discuss the different animal models of disease; provide students with the best experimental techniques to different species (analgesia e anesthesia, material collection, contention and euthanasia); offer students a global vision about the contribution of laboratory animals to men’s health and welfare through the development of biological sciences; present and discuss international principles that guide researches involving live animals; present and discuss ethical principles of research on experimental animals; present and stimulate the search for alternative methods during experimentation; advise students about the elaboration of experimental protocols using live animals.
Cycle of special debates on health
Set of conferences lectured by reputed professors and professionals about themes such as projects on health policies; research methods in the area of health and their scientific and social results; scientific knowledge; thoughts on the accomplishments of molecular biology; the role of computing in current scientific investigation and the importance of bioethics for professionals and researchers.
Advanced topics on molecular biology
Molecular cloning; expression of recombinant proteins; culture of cells and tissues; interference rna; genic therapy; application of molecular biology techniques in the diagnosis of diseases caused by microorganisms and viruses; transgenic animals; current themes on molecular biology.
Cells involved in immune response, innate immune system, adaptive immune response, antigens and antibodies, cytokines and their receptors, t and b lymphocytes.
Inflammatory process and its pharmacological control
Study about the mechanisms involved in triggering inflammatory and painful processes as well as the main drugs used in these processes; chronic and acute inflammatory reaction, chemical mediators and vascular and cellular events involved in inflammatory response; inflammatory pain; solving inflammatory processes; steroidal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (glucocorticoids);
Nutritional biochemistry with emphasis on obesity and metabolic disorders
Metabolism of nutrients in the fasting and feeding cycles. Physiopathologies and metabolic alterations in obesity and their consequences to the development of correlated metabolic disorders (inflammation, insulin resistance, hypertension and dyslipidemias).
Advanced pharmacognosy
Plant secondary metabolites that have biological and pharmacological activities. Main biosynthetic routes of these metabolites. Brief introduction to the main classes of terpenoids: mono-, sesqui-, di- and triterpenoids; phenolics: flavonoids, tannins, quinones, phenylpropanoids; alkaloids. Importance in the plant biome (allelopathy, antimicrobial, inseticide, etc) and the importance to human beings (antimicrobial, antitumoral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, etc). Examples from the constituent classes. Phytotherapy.
