Dourados, the second biggest city in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, was founded in 1935 and is located 220km from the state’s capital, Campo Grande, and 120km from the border with Paraguay. According to IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística), the city has about 200 thousand inhabitants, including 13 thousand native indians who belong to Guarani Cauá, Guarani Ñadeva and Terena ethnic groups.
With a tropical climate, Dourados is an important agricultural, industrial and commercial center in the region. Regarding agriculture and animal husbandry, the city is a great producer of soya bean, corn and bean, besides pork and poultry. In the industrial and commercial sector, there are slaughterhouses and an animal food factory, besides chemical industries.
For fun, Dourados offers annual fairs and festivals, such as Expoagro (agricultural, industrial and commercial fair), the University Theater Festival, and the Nations Festival, not to mention the a large number of events promoted by the four universities presented in the city (Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados, Universidade Estadual do Mato Grosso do Sul, UNIGRAN and Anhaguera). There are also parks, a shopping mall, some nightclubs, bars and good restaurants in the city.
